How To Prepare For A Car Accident Lawyer Consultation Visit

Posted on

After going through a traumatic car accident, you will need to visit a personal injury lawyer at some point to begin working on settling your case. If you are preparing to do this but do not know where to start, here are several things you should do and know as you prepare to meet with a lawyer for help settling your car accident case:

Gather up your evidence

You will receive the best advice possible at this appointment if you come prepared -- and coming prepared means bringing everything you have about the accident with you. This will include bringing pictures from the accident scene, the police report written up after the accident, and medical bills from the treatment you received. If you kept a journal after the accident, bring this to the meeting as well, and bring any other documents or evidence you have that will help prove what happened in the accident, or the effect the accident had on your life. The lawyer you meet with will want to see all of these things in order to give you the proper legal advice about how to proceed with the case.

Write up a list of questions

Secondly, you should compile a list of questions to ask the lawyer during this meeting, and you may want to start creating this list several weeks before your appointment. As you create the list, add questions as they come to you, and make sure the list covers everything. For example, you could ask the lawyer:

  • How long will it take to settle?
  • What challenges do you see in this case?
  • How much money will the settlement be?
  • What steps can you take to prove the extent of the injuries?

These are some examples of good questions to ask during this visit, but you should add any other questions that are important to you.

Avoid waiting too long

If someone else caused this accident, you have the legal right to seek compensation from this person, or his or her insurance company; however, you only have a limited amount of time to initiate your case. This may be one year, or it might be longer, but you cannot wait too long to file a case. If you do, you will lose the right to file.
